Standing in Solidarity: Recognizing Red Dress Day
Posted by Jason on May 05, 2023
Red Dress Day, also known as the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA+ People, is observed on May 5th each year. This day serves as a reminder of the countless indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA+ people who have been lost to violence, and as a call to action for all Canadians to recognize and address this ongoing crisis.
At Turtle Island Market, we are proud to stand in solidarity with the Indigenous communities who have been impacted by this tragedy, and to raise awareness about the importance of this day.
One of the most powerful symbols of Red Dress Day is the red dress itself. This symbol represents the many Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA+ people who have gone missing or been murdered, and serves as a reminder that they are not forgotten. By wearing red on May 5th, we can show our support for these individuals and their families, and help to bring attention to this issue.
As an Indigenous-owned apparel store, Turtle Island Market is dedicated to supporting Indigenous communities and promoting Indigenous culture. We believe that it is important to not only recognize Red Dress Day, but to actively work towards addressing the root causes of violence against Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA+ people.
One way to do this is by supporting organizations such as the Native Women's Association of Canada (NWAC), which has been working tirelessly to address the issue of missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA+ people for over 45 years. NWAC provides support and advocacy for Indigenous women and girls, and works to address the systemic factors that contribute to violence against them.
At Turtle Island Market, we encourage our customers to support NWAC by making a donation or purchasing one of our Red Dress Day items, such as our Red Dress Day t-shirts or our Red Dress Day hoodie. By doing so, you can help to raise awareness and support Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA+ people across Canada.
In conclusion, Red Dress Day is an important day to recognize and remember the Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA+ people who have been lost to violence. At Turtle Island Market, we are proud to stand in solidarity with Indigenous communities, and to support organizations like NWAC who are working to address this ongoing crisis. We encourage everyone to wear red on May 5th, and to take action to support Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA+ people in their communities.
